#1: Join a club. Or 2. Or 10.

I know the thought of giving up an hour of your time to sit through a meeting doesn't sound as appealing as an hour of Netflix does, but I promise it will pay off for you in the long run.

Getting involved and making the most of your time in college is important. Employers will look to see how you spent your spare time in college, especially if you were involved with clubs and organizations pertaining to your major. Extracurricular activities are a big part of your resume, if you don't have any it looks like you sat around and watched Netflix all day. Employers don't want that; they want hard working, social, outgoing people to fill their positions.

Not only do clubs boost your resume, but they are also a great way to make friends. Even if you think you have allllllllll the friends you want right now, there is always room for more friends! Plus, it’s always nice to meet people in clubs because you most likely have common interests. Then there's always something to talk about.

Fraternities/Sororities would also be considered a club. The thing with Greek life is people either like it or they don't. Some people will try to talk you out of it because 'It's just a way to buy your friends' and 'They're full of preppy stuck up people,' but don't listen to them. Every Greek I know loves it, they truly have a brother/sister bond and they always seem to be having a good time. Greek is not my thing, but I would never try to talk anyone out of it. Do what makes YOU happy.

If you are thinking about getting involved and you’re just not sure what club would suit you best, there is a Clubs and Organization Fair at the beginning of the school year. You will be able to talk to some of the members from each of the groups to see what each one is all about. There are over 200 clubs and organizations, so I’m sure you will be able to find one that fits you.

Don't be that kid that sits in their room all day. College is about socializing, meeting new people, and most importantly building your future. Join a club, get involved. I promise you won't regret it.

  1. I love the theme of your blog! Great first post about getting involved on campus. I don't think freshmen realize how important it is to join a club. But at the same time, I know of seniors who aren't involved either. It's never too late!

  2. Hi Jordan,

I really enjoy this blog post. As a community assistant here at SRU, i always am encouraging my residents to get involved on campus. It seriously improves your time in college tenfold.

  3. The only thing I'd add is that you should only take on as much as you can handle. It's better to do one thing well than two things poorly, so try not to over-extend yourself.
